Artist's Comments

Lately I've been trying to search for pro-choice art, and the only way I can do that is type 'abortion' into the search engine because I swear, you don't find a damn thing when you type "pro-choice" in the search  And of course, I always find a bunch of pro-life stuff, which I can't help but glance at. And so...I ended up getting a little pissed off by the vast majority of art being pro-life and so I quickly whipped this up.

I actually did another piece months ago...but it was really a bit more disturbing than this and I never got around to finishing it. I'm sorry for the crappiness of this piece. But that's what happens when I do traditional media.

Yes, I am pro-choice. I support a woman's right to choose whether or not she wants to carry a pregnancy to term. I do not believe the government has any right to determine if a woman should have a baby, as they cannot possibly know every woman's situation and whether or not it permits her to actually raise a child. I understand where pro-lifers are coming from, however. I think both sides have commendable and valid arguments. I was once pro-life myself, and only budged on the idea of abortion in cases of rape and health concerns but as time went on, and I did more research, I could no longer stick to those views. I believe pro-life is anti-woman.

And I am tolerable of those who understand that a woman should at least be able to choose if she was raped or if she'll die. It's when people believe a woman should be forced to go through with a pregnancy even if she was raped that I get pissed. Making abortion illegal won't make it go away, but instead will put womens' lives in danger. I think instead we need better sex education instead of this abstinence-only bullshit. We should make birth control more accessible, and we should also stop telling teens that masturbation is a sin. And parents should also be more open with their kids about sex instead of acting like it's the worst thing in the world for kids to be having sexual feelings. Seriously, parents, grow the fuck up.

Also, regarding the adoption card that pro-life people like to pull, they say that abortion can cause emotional trauma for women. Yes, this is true. I won't deny that. However, so can adoption. So really, if it's the woman's mental health you're concerned about (though I doubt it), it really makes no difference whether she has an abortion or chooses adoption. The woman can still suffer great emotional trauma afterwards, so it really doesn't make any difference. So I say let the mother decide which is the better choice, as only she can make such a decision.

From ReproductiveRights.org:

Before Roe, it is estimated that "between 200,000 and 1.2 million illegally induced abortions occur[red] annually in the United States."1 As many as 5,000 to 10,000 women died per year following illegal abortions and many others suffered severe physical and psychological injury.

You know...I've seen so many photos of monuments for aborted fetuses:

I'm just curious...are there ANY monuments out there that honor the memory of those women who had to die a horrible death because of unsafe abortions? I want to know :| Because all I ever see is monuments for the fetuses. Why is it that microscopic cells are honored, but not the women who didn't have a choice? It can be debated all day whether or not those fetuses felt pain, or suffered, but there is no doubt that those women felt pain. They died horrible, lonely deaths, and no one seems to give a shit.

You'll get no hateful comments from me. Very good piece, the message makes up for the perceived 'crappiness'.

I like to check the recent updates, and yours caught my eye. Sorry for the somewhat lackluster reply, but I'm reading your piece on atheism on another page. Talk to ya soon! *runs off across The Tubes*

It's a good message, Dracori. Abortion is an awfully touchy topic which I myself get nervous when it comes to debate. I guess I can call my self a pro-choice too, because it just makes damn sense.

Like I said, I like the message. It's sad, the quotes are painful...it really makes me feel bad for the young women who go through all that non sense.

Thanks :) And it's painful for me too to think about these women and their situations. And apparently, McCain's VP choice is against abortion as well...even if the woman was raped

I'm pro-choice, in that way were i think the mother should do what she thinks right. If she's a teenager, and forgot protection, well let her get rid of the the kid. It takes alot for women to realize that they're not mother material.

About the art:The face looks a little flat. I've noticed in most of your art, the faces are full front. Since i rould think this is realism, i would suggest fore colouring on the face, and that the ears are a bit stick-outish. Fantastic colouring everywhere else though, the hair looks amazing. i love the blonde touches.

I personally think abortion is just another way of taking responsibility, though I know many would disagree. I mean, having a child when you haven't even graduated high school, don't have a job, and don't have anyone else but yourself to help raise it isn't exactly responsible.

I know the face sucks. I tried to make her head looking down...but I kept screwing it it up. I used mostly watercolor, though I probably should have used more prismacolor on her face so it wouldn't look so flat. If I had done this in Photoshop, it would have looked much better. But I was in no mood to fool with it :XD: I bow to those who can do amazing work with traditional media.

This isn't a crappy piece at all; it's really good, and the message is very clear.

Honestly, I don't see how some pro-life people can really see things like that. I don't think that anybody -- regardless of their situation -- should have to go through a pregnancy if they don't want to. Raising a child is NOT an easy thing, and the real world isn't like "Juno" where you can just open the Pennysaver and find adoptive parents in less than a minute.

Also, it really pisses me off when people say that the woman should just "live with her mistake".

It never ceases to amaze me how close-minded the fundies can be. I mean, most of the anti-abortionists are also anti-birth control and pro-abstinence, which just makes it even moar stupid. Tsk tsk. If insurance companies would pay for birth control like they do Viagra (yes, they do pay for these stupid blue pills) and sex ed classes weren't 'OMG absistence only!' and fundies stopped spreading lies about birth control, then more women wouldn't have to face the decision of a abortion. And if she DOES need to face this decision... well, that's between her and whatever god she believes in. It is no one else's MOTHERFUCKING business.

I'm not going to "hate" message you but as a watcher of your art I have to say I disagree with you. I don't know why you feel this way and I know there are reasons but I can never get past the childs right to life. I try to be open minded and I do understand when it's between the child and the mother's life, then it's a very difficult decision all the way around (if the mother's in a coma or otherwise unable to make the dicission the family is faced with the choice), but I can not bring myself to blame the child for a rape situation. I wish they had some form of artificial womb, but as aweful as rape is I believe the child still has a right to life, even if they are put of for adoption.

I felt the need to comment because even though I am pro-life Ido not think women who have abortions are whores or the child is the proporty of the US gov I beleve the woman is normaly confused or mislead or hurt or scared.

Also to aproach the subject from a more ojective standpoint as an american citizen. I know that we are granted the constitutional right to life. Just as with gun control issues, I may not like guns (I really detest the things), but I will defend every american's right to bear (sp?) arms because it is in the constitution of our country and if we start to stray from our constitutional framwork new unforseeable problems will arise.

Once again not trying to flame just speaking my piece.
